Contextual Reference

Nanami Cowdroy is one of my favourite illustrators and have liked her work for a very long time. I forgot all about her work until today when I came across her again on pinterest and her work has given me a very good idea for my printed pictures.

Follow Rosie Fairholm's board Nanami Cowdroy on Pinterest.

As you can see on quite a lot of her work the composition consists of one focus then lots of imagery coming from that one image. I especially like the idea of the image below of using a silhouette.

I was thinking that I could have the murder weapon and then aspects of the story coming from that weapon.

However, I'm not sure how this idea would work well onto tea towels I don't think that it would have the right ascetics. Though, after looking at Nanami Cowdroy images on Pinterest I think that this concept would work well with a cushion which was one of my ideas right at the beginning.

The Mysterious Affair At Styles

I thought that I should go back and bullet point all the key themes from 'The mysterious affair at styles' too.

The key visual themes that I want to use are: Poison, coffee cup, document case and the country manor house.

Death on the Nile

The next book that I have looked at is 'Death on the Nile' and bullet pointed key themes.1937.

Key visual images: an engagement ring, Nile river cruise, pistol, pearl necklace, a stabbing and  a bottle of wine. Here I've collected images to work with:

Stabbing (I can use the imagery of a knife that I used for the other book)

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

After having my tutorial I need to now look at another two more of Agatha Christie's books rather than just focusing on the one. I next looked at 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd'. I made a list of all the key parts and themes of the book:

Key visuals that stuck out too me were the dictaphone, the stabbing and the goose feather quill. So I have collected some images to work from.

Dictaphone:
 Knife:
 Goose Quill:

Contextual Reference

After having my tutorial I am left feeling a little bit lost and not sure where I am going with everything now. So I thought I would have a look at some other Agatha Christie animations that have been made for some inspiration.

Tutorial 2

Just had my tutorial with Elena. After discussing my moving and printed images with her I need to simplify a lot. Particularly my animation. I was going to do the 30-60 second animation but now I am changing to the 10 second sting. In each sting I am going to animate an abstract murder scene from three different books of hers. Similar to the Dragon Frame animation that I did before. But to simplify my animation we discussed using collage; sticking with the era. So finding tea cups and patterned backgrounds from around that time. For my printed images I will use key parts from the animations and involve them into my tea towels and have a murder for each tea towels but having the contrasting quote as well "The best ideas for a book happen when washing the dishes". I need to look at fonts around the era and will combine that into my design

Practise Lino

I asked if it was possible to Lino on to fabric and for the inks to stay even after being washed, and it is possible. So I think that I definitely want to create lino prints onto tea towels. Here I have made a mini practise lino piece:

Peer Review

In preparation for my peer review I brought in some story boards of my ideas, my proposal and my sketchbook with drawings and colour samples in. Before this crit/review I still felt quite a bit lost and wasn't really happy with where I was going with the animation. I knew that I wanted to do the 30-60 second animation but I wasn't happy with the content of the animation as thought it didn't necessarily relate to the brief and needed to be more simple and effective.

I feel so much better after talking my idea through with someone. I am pleased with the honesty that I received as it has actually been very constructive for me. They said that it all seems a bit confusing and need to have more of a specific focus. I was focusing on one book as a whole. But was advised to look at one quote in particular, and because I am supposed to be advertising for a documentary I should look at some quotes from Agatha Christie and work with one of them.

Also, after this crit I feel like I need to organise myself more so I created a time table to work with. And photocopied some storyboards to help clearly display my thoughts and ideas for my animation sequence.

After the advise I was given about quotes I found one that stuck out to me to have a good potential animation.
"The best time to plan a book is while you are doing the dishes." Agatha Christie.
I have now decided  that I shall still stick to the same beginning that I did before in my storyboard of having the manor house and zooming into the window but this time when you go into the window you see Agatha Christie there washing her dishes. And then this will zoom closer to her and thought bubbles will appear from her which will illustrate some key ideas/scenes from the book "The mysterious affair at styles" which I have mainly focused on. Then at the end the quote will appear.

After creating my story board Elena showed us some contextual videos to help us get some ideas on how to add text and sound to our animations. One of the adverts gave me an idea for my animation to have the whole animation done in one continuous line. This I feel relates to Agatha Christie and her writing; murder mysteries and that everything in some way links together to the final bigger picture.

Also, I have found this video on youtube which also uses continuous line.

Quote

Was looking at some image references for Agatha Christie and came across this quote. I was really drawn to it. I think that it relates to my moods and themes of my animation as it really gives this sense of mystery. Particularly like her use of the word 'curious'

Colour References

The book I have been looking at 'The Mysterious Affair At Styles' is based in the middle of WW1 around 1916. So I have had a look at images focusing on their use of colours to understand the colours that would of been used in that era as think that it is very important to portray across within both my animation and printed images a sense of the era. After collecting these images I think that the key colours within them are beige, brown, orange, reds and black. Though I don't want to involve too many colours on the go for either my printed pictures or animation. Therefore I am going to narrow down to three which will be: Black, Cream and burgundy. The cream colour in the printed pictures will just be the fabric itself. I am particularly looking at the colour scheme of this book for inspiration for my colour choice.

Tutorial 1

I had my tutorial one on one with Elena today. I found that it was quite helpful and gave me some guidance on my blogging. From now on I am going to create separate blog posts rather than having each brief in one long blog post so that it is easier to view. She said that I need to be more critical and evaluative when talking about work of mine and others. Plus I need to talk to the printing technicians about my ideas for my printed pictures project because I was hoping to use lino  printing onto cushions and tea towels but need to find out if this is possible as I don't want the prints to be able to wash off.
