Studio Brief 1: Initial Brief

In this 2 week based project we were all given a sheet with a number of questions on for us to answer about ourselves. For example: If we were to go to a fancy dress party what would we go as. We came back with our answers and were then put into pairs and spoke to eachother in length about our answers and generally got to know eachother. After that we found out our task was to use your partners answer sheets and from the conversation that we had with our partner use their initials to create a final poster.

Here are some photographs of my development work. We were told to begin by folding A2 paper down so it divided the page down into separate rectangles so it made it easier to show my ideas.

Here is my very first development sheets just getting the very first initial ideas down.

Next I did two separate sheets one for each of her initials. (L and D).

Next chose our favourite 5 ideas and enlarged them up into A5 images. We then got into small groups and spoke about the five images and what the ideas behind them were. I found this to be really helpful getting feedback and thoughts from other peers in my class and to see what their ideas for their work were.

After that we then narrowed the ideas to the two that we would be using and started to develop on them and tried and tested different mediums and techniques for them to see what looks best. Throughout doing this I asked around for the thoughts and opinions of others in my class as I always think its uselful to see what others think and to get a range of opinions.

Here I decided to try and see what black paper would be like to use and tried out a few different media's on it.

I then decided to repetitively draw different cat faces in my sketchbook to help me decide what the cat character would look like. I think doing this really helped to visually get my ideas down and putting them all next to each other rather than just dotted around made it a lot easier to look at my ideas clearly.

This is a photo of my final end resulting poster. To finish off we presented our work up on the walls and we around the class to see what each other had done and left a little note next to it with a drawing of a tomato on to who's work we were most drawn too and they would win a tin of chopped tomatoes.

Here are my feedback sheets that peers in my class filled in. The general feedback was that they thought it was a bold looking poster and they like the contrast of the black and white. However the fish bones distract from the cats face a bit. Which I completely agree with.

Induction Week 2

Using our summer project our brief for this week was to pick one of our 10 illustrations and then create 10 of something to do with that illustration; which then would be presented on Friday on size A2 paper.

Here are my ideas:

I decided to use the illustration of me doing my Sambuca shot trick which I was taught during the summer and create 10 illustrations of 10 different peoples facial reactions after having a shot.

To begin I took photographs so I could use them as reference to work from.
Here are some of the photos that I took:

Here are some photos of my development work:

Once I had my reference I tried out many different techniques of illustrating my 10 faces. I felt that continuous blind drawings worked best as it really reflected the subject matter well. I used a thick black marker with another coloured marker over the top also in continuous blind drawing. However, I then thought I shouldn’t just narrow it down to peoples facial expressions after having a shot, so I slightly changed my idea to peoples facial reactions to having something sour as I believed that I could get more of a range of expressions.

Here are some images of what the final outcome looked like:

In our group crit this time we drew three eyeballs which suggested the best visual work and three thought bubbles which represented the best ideas. So walked around viewing each others work and gave who we thought deserved our eyeball and thought bubbles. I was really happy to get back to find a lot of people had placed theirs on by my work; also, some people left comments saying that they liked the idea of my work and liked the method in which I created it in.

Induction Week 1

To begin our course we were given a brief named 'The most stupidest brief ever' which involved us bringing in an unwanted garment and illustrate something that would make someone smile on it. I thought this was such a great idea for our first brief so we could see everyone's light humorous side.  For mine I brought in a spare t-shirt and turned it inside out so it gave me a blank base to work on. I picked a popular song which everyone knows and made it humorous. Similar to the summer project crit we presented our garments for everyone to have a walk around and view but instead of leaving notes we were told to draw a bean on three bits of paper and leave a bean on your top three pieces of work. I was really pleased that I received some beans next to my work, its a nice way to give you a bit of boost of confidence. Also it was great to see everyone else's work and the different ways that they interpreted the brief, and showing off their humour.

Summer Brief and Feedback

Towards the end of summer we were given a project to kick start the course. On size 10cm by 10cm paper we were told to create 10 illustrations in response to 10 questions which all related to our summer holidays. For example 'Something you heard this summer'.

In class we laid out and presented our work and then did a group crit. We did this by having a walk around and viewed what everyone had presented and leaving a note next to peoples work giving our thoughts and opinions. I thought it was a great opportunity to see everyone's ways of working and to have an insight into their lives and seeing personalities through their work.
My feedback went well; comments mainly saying they like my use of continuous line and watercolours. I feel though that after seeing other peoples work I needed to not be so vague, I think the more successful pieces were the ones that were more simplistic and to the point.
