Applied Illustration Proposal

Project Rational
I plan on producing my own illustrated range of products. This will include:

-     - Soft plush toys
-     - T-shirts
-     - Stickers
-     - Tote bags
-     - Note Book

However, taking into consideration the amount of time we have and juggling with other projects as well I am aware that I might not be able to produce everything on the list. My main focus will be making the toys.

What do you want to achieve?
I always want to learn something new and I feel that while I am here at uni this is the time to take opportunities and experiment. Therefore, I want to create a set of toys as I have never tried doing this before. I intend to create 5 characters that will be put across a number of products. In order to be able to achieve this I need to not make my characters too complicated.

What do you want to learn from doing it?
   - I would like this brief to help me make my work become more professional and hopefully make something worth selling.
   - I would like to gain an understanding on how I would market my own product range.
   - Have awareness and gain knowledge on where my work would exist in the world and too see it in context.
   - To gain a better understanding on what’s popular and sells and the reason why.

   - How to create successful characters. I shall find this out by getting opinions from other people both in and out of the creative world.

Themes/Subjects
General Themes
At the moment I have gone down the route of pets. This could change as I explore it more. However, I think that pets is a good strong theme as many people can relate or most people like animals therefore I think that this could be quite popular.

Specific Subjects:

   - Plush Toys
   - Stickers
   - Tote Bags
   - T-Shirts
   - Note Books

Practical & Conceptual Application
   - Character Design
   - Product Design
   - Research into todays market

   - Contextual Research

Audience/Contexts:

   - 14-24 year old
   - Teens/young adults
   - Women/Girls

Production/Distribution methods:

I will have a range of production methods. Number one will be the use of sewing machines and hand stitching to create my toys. Then when making T-shirts and tote bags I will screen print to create them. To make stickers I will need to have a drawn version, which I would then put onto Photoshop to refine and then digitally printed into stickers. In addition when making a notebook this could also be digitally printed then hand bound.

Contextual References
Illustrators/Designers/Studios:

A large influence will be the range of Ugly Dolls created by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim.

Creative Skills - Practical skills I intend to further develop and apply during my project.
   - Because I want to keep my characters quite simple this will          limit the amount of colours that I will be using so will need to      stick to a limited colour palette which will help me develop on      my skills in working with colour.
   - Screen printing skills
   - Character development and exploration.
   - Using sewing machines
   - Hand sewing
   - Working with fabric

   - Applying my illustration across a range of products and working      as a set.
