Final Evaluation

I feel like I have learnt a lot over the course of this module. To begin with I was feeling quite negative towards the idea of creating moving pictures as I had attempted a stop frame animation before in the past which didn't go successfully. Though, I was really excited a the prospect of having the opportunity to try out different printing processes. However, looking back over my work and my blog I would say I have probably focused more on the animation side; I feel like that is because I felt like it would be my strongest weakness of the module so wanted to push myself. Overall I really did enjoy developing and learning new skills in both the processes equally, but I did at times find it quite difficult managing the two together.

I really enjoyed the visual journal in the beginning of the module. I've never really explored or experimented with collage before and found that  I really took to it and have continued to use it across other modules. I found that collage worked really well for my moving pictures as gave it this homemade quality to it. I didn't want to create anything too digital as I think that the use of collage helped set the aesthetics for the eras in which the books were set. To continue this handmade look through my printed pictures I felt like lino was the best method. I am really pleased with the lines in the background I feel that it seems to give this aged look to the prints.

My time management skills have slightly improved. I think looking back I should have been more specific with times and dates, and need to be more strict on myself at sticking to what I have set myself to do. But I have found it helpful to regularly write down a list of everything that I need to do. I think that in future I need to write more structured timetables and rather than just writing them down and then not looking at them again I need to stick them up somewhere I will look at regularly.

When I was creating my animation I spent a lot of time deciding which font to go along side. Because I have very little knowledge about font I wasn't quite sure which ones were best to use. I was very apprehensive about using After Effects and the Dragon Frame software as I do generally struggle with anything digital. Once I knew how to work Dragon Frame I got quite confident with using it and setting it all up. I did have a bit of a battle with getting to grips with After Effects; after creating the first animation and writing down notes throughout the process it did help make the other two stings go slightly smoother.Another aspect of the animation I did find a bit of a hurdle was trying to find the right sounds to accompany it and placing it at the right time. But I feel like they have gone successfully. In addition, I think that discovering Vimeo really helped me gather inspiration for this project and helped encourage and trigger ideas. However, in the beginning I did go back and forth with some ideas. But I am pleased with the path that I went down with them being able to relate to the printed pictures too.

For my printed pictures I feel like I thoroughly explored the different possible compositions before choosing the final one. Using tracing paper was helpful for me to layer the components in different ways. I did find it challenging cutting out the intricate details within the linos, and did make a few mistakes along the way but I do really enjoy this process and find it quite satisfying. I felt that the more I did as well the better I was getting at creating the small details. I was disappointed to find out that the inks used for lino would not stay on the fabrics after being washed a few times; and which resulted in me creating three more lino prints in order for me to then respond to a different spec on the brief as I could no longer be doing the printed products.

Throughout the module I actually feel that I kept very on top of my blog and feel that this has aided my in staying organised and visible to see the journey I have gone through.I think that learning to use Issuu has helped majorly in maintaining a clear and easily manageable. However, at the beginning of the module I was making one long blog post for everything in each module. It wasn't until I spoke to Eleanor and was advised not to do this and create separate blog posts. After being told this it actually encouraged me to blog more I think this was because it made my blog a lot more clearer and organised plus it didn't feel an effort posting little and often rather than a lot at once. I will definitely continue to blog in this way in all future modules.

Overall, I think that this module has pushed me to experiment and try new things. I am excited to build on the skills that I've learnt within this module by carrying them on with me into future projects. I spent a lot of time and effort into this module and I hope that that shows through my blog and work.

Completed Small Prints

Went to print my small accompanying prints today. I feel like they went successfully. I was worried that they might not print as well with using the old pieces of lino with my previous prints on the back but they came out just as well.

Sound Effects - Sting 3

For this third sting I wanted you to hear the sound of the gun shot. I didn't want it to go too quickly as the gun itself it going slightly in slow motion so the sound needs to be slowed down. This wasn't too hard to find in comparison to sting 2.

Sound Effects - Sting 2

These are a few sound effects that I collected to emulate the sound of the knife dropping on the floor. I really wanted you to be able to here it clanking on the floor as it slightly bounces. I found this particularly hard to find and had to search for it in numerous ways such as: metal dropping, metal pipe dropping, knife dropping etc.

Sound Effects - Sting 1

Here are a few pouring sound effects are possibles that I could use to accompany my sting to go with the pouring of the poison. I did search through a lot of different ones but narrowed down to these:

Additional Prints

Because the printed products didn't work out I am now going to have to go back and look at the brief. Instead I am now going to have to do the set/series/sequence of 5 to 10 prints. I have 3 done already so I will do 3 small ones which each will relate to the bigger ones.

Looking back at the components that I made before for the big prints I can still use them and make small compositions with them. Here are the compositions that I played around with:

Sting 3 - Eye Closing Test

sting 3 - eye test from Rosie Fairholm on Vimeo.

Made a tester animation for this to see how it will look like. I am pleased with it overall but when putting onto Dragon Frame this needs to be made much longer as this goes way to quick. Therefore I either need to make more frames or take more photographs on Dragon Frame so the image appears for longer.

I wanted to go to the AV suite today to put it all into Dragon Frame; I was told it would be open and took out a camera but unfortunately it was locked so this has set me back a bit.

Sting 3 - Colour decisions

I've made some small thumbnail samples of the eye closing in on the gun scene. But I am not sure whether to have it in colour with skin tones or black and white so that it can link in with the colours of the gun. After drawing this it helped me get a visual idea of what it would look like. I have decided to go for the coloured eye; as I can always edit it on after effects to make them black and white so that I still have the option.

Sting 2 - Dragon Frame

Today I put my second sting into Dragon Frame again because I had made the image the wrong size I have had to zoom in. This has effected this animation a lot more than the first sting. Especially in the opening scene with the front door because you lose a chunk of the house that I had drawn. I am really disappointed with this but have had to work with it.

Printing

I completed all of my prints today. I am really happy with how they came out on the tote bags and onto paper. However, on the cushions they came out rather faded. Plus on the gun print I accidentally dropped the cushion and therefore making it have an even more faded print shadowing it. This is very frustrating especially as I wasn't able to buy any more cushions therefore these had to of been done perfectly. Another issue that I came across was that today I was told that the inks in lino print wont permanently stay on the fabric and will come off after a while. This is very frustrating as before Christmas I was told that this was possible.

Sting 1 - Dragon Frame

Today I have photographed my first sting into DragonFrame. I discovered that my wallpapered background wasn't the right size for the frame therefore I had to zoom in a bit more therefore losing some of the image which was a shame.

Experimenting with Tea Cup sizes

I was booked into Dragon Frame today so during the morning I was preparing sting one to be ready. These are some photographs of me experimenting with the tea cup size to see which would work best and placed the poison bottles around if to see if the whole composition would fit together

Finished Linos

Cutting out the linos took a bit longer than I thought. It was a bit of a challenge trying to get the intricate details but I am happy with how the came out. Plus I do find the whole process of cutting very satisfying.

Cushions Found

I have managed to come across 3 plain cream cushions sized 30cm x 30cm. There was literally only 3 left in stock so will not be able to make any mistakes which is not ideal but will have to practice onto paper first and on the tote bags.
