I then narrowed it down to the three that I found most interesting. Which were William Shakespeare, Agatha Christie and Guy Browning.

As you can see from the spider diagram I found the most information on Agatha Christie and I really found her books and her life interesting to read about.
Poirot is one of most well known characters.
I found this story interesting about Agatha Christie. She in fact had a bit of a mystery herself. She disappeared for 11 days on the 3rd of Decemember 1926.
I decided to go for the theme of discovery. The three motifs that I chose that best symbolise discovery are: magnify glass, a compass and a boat.
Figuring out some compositions that involve all three of the motifs.
Using college and the different types of lines.
"Really like the multiple magnifying glasses."
"Psychedelic"
"Have a play with layering with tracing paper or on photoshop."
"Pattern of objects build up - shows how lots of small details is what makes a murder mystery - also gives a sense of building up the atmosphere and tension."
I have gone off the idea of the theme discovery and the motifs that I chose as I don't really think that they connote Agatha Christie or her books at all. I will stick with the magnify glass as that illustrates the thoughts of detectives, mystery and solving problems which are what her books are based around. For my second and third motifs I will base them on the book I am reading 'The mysterious affair at styles': a bottle of poison and a candle.
Using the backgrounds and textures that I'd created I combined them with my motifs.
Self Evaluation and Rationale:
1. What 5 things have you gained from this work and how will this impact on your practice?
- I really suprised myself with how much I enjoyed playing aoround and really got stuck in with exploring new ways of portraying messages.
- Definitly will work with Brusho again, I had never actually used it before up until now.
- I quite liked working at an A5 scale. I usualy go for an A4/3 sized sketchbook. I think because there wasn't a big blank page it didn't feel as daughnting to get stuck right in. Also, because A5 is more portable and easier to manage I was finding myself doing more work.
- Knowing that there was no final piece to create made me feel less pressure to create something perfect and the freedom to test out different ideas.
- Because we had to make 16/12 it made me speed up my work process.
2. What 5 things do you intend to explore further through your visual journal and why?
- I think cause we could only have a maximum of 3 motifs and set myself a certain amount of colours and to stick to an A5 size it actually helped me. Giving myself restrictions forced me to be more creative using what I had and created things which I would never of done without of having these restrictions. Therefore I want to keep giving myself aims to stick to.
- The use of collage. I want to be more playful and creative and push myself further.
- experiment with different medias such as inks, pens and brusho etc.
- Composition. I think that I need to explore more ways in which I can compose these 3 motifs in interesting ways.
What themes do you intend to further explore through your visual journal and how will you explore these visually?
- Definitely want to work more with the an eery feeling of murder and mystery and think that this can be illustrated through the use of colour. I think that colour can be quite a powerful thing and can change the mood and views of an image. I am happy with the colours that I have been working with but think I need to come up with a more definite colour scheme and stick with it.
- I think that I need to re think my motifs to help create this mood.
How do these themes relate to your research into your chosen author?
- Most of Agatha Christie's books are all based around a murder mystery so arises a lot of the same types of themes and atmospheres within them so I really want to capture that feeling you get when you are reading one of her books.
